Locals Unite to Defeat Divestment Resolution at University of California San Diego

UC San Diego Associated Students (AS) council voted Wednesday (29 Feb) not to adopt a divestment resolution proposed by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). The resolution called for the UC system to divest from General Electric and Northrop Grumman in light of their association with Israel. This is the third year in a row that SJP has introduced a divestment resolution to council and failed to have it pass. In 2010 and 2011 the UCSD student council ultimately tabled the resolution without taking a stance. UCSD now becomes is the second UC campus to fail the resolution following on UC Berkeley, whose  student Senate failed in 2010 to override the veto of then-AS President Will Smelko of a similar divestment resolution. The fight against the resolution was carried out by a broad coalition of concerned students and others directly associated with the UCSD community and they all deserve real credit for fighting for the integrity of their institution in the face of the SJP effort to turn USCD into a megaphone for BDS propagandizing. Daniel Friedman, President of Tritons for Israel, put forward in this piece the clear and cogent case against the resolution, noting the deliberate singling out of Israel, the resolution’s potential divisive and polarizing impact on the campus community, and the boycott agenda’s inherent bullying and silencing of institutions and individuals alike.
