Moroccan singer Hindi Zahra performs in Israel, ignoring calls for boycott

After receiving several prestigious prizes such as the 2011 Victoire de la Musique award for the best world music album, Hindi Zahra went on an international tour in the context of which she performed in Tel Aviv on November 12, 2011. Her visit to Israel was predictably targeted by BDS activists, but Zahra rejected the calls to cancel her Tel Aviv gig. After returning to perform in Morocco, an interesting exchange between boycott activists and their opponents broke out in the social media, allowing us a window on the radical mindset of the boycotters and their willingness to instrumentalize artists and others, including the domestic pro-democracy protests, for their own political ends. Zahra’s responses also highlight the willingness of decent people to stand up for artists’ rights to perform freely.
