France – Israeli author ejected from Writers Conference

At a conference of Mediterranean writers held in Marseilles on 5th December, Israeli author Moshe Sakal was excluded from a panel discussion at the request of Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish. The director of the conference, French-Jewish author Pierre Assouline, said Sakal’s participation in the panel, which was on the Arab Spring, “was not crucial.” He also said that in the previous two years the conference had been held, Palestinian writers had refused to come because there were Israeli participants. Finally, he added that half the audience was very upset by this ejection. According to Sakal, major Moroccan poet and writer Tahar Ben Jelloun (the most translated francophone writer in the world) spoke forcefully against this type of boycott.
